Things to Do in Alexandria MN: The Local's Guide (2027)
The local's guide to things to do in Alexandria MN: golf, 100+ lakes, wineries, fall colors, winter trails, and where groups should stay.
"What is there to do in Alexandria MN?" — every first-time guest asks it, and every returning guest already knows the answer: more than fits in a weekend. This is the local's rundown of things to do in Alexandria, Minnesota, built for cabin groups staying on the lakes. Two hours from the Twin Cities, in the Fargo media market, and surrounded by 100+ lakes: here's how the locals do it.
Golf: 7+ courses within 25 minutes
Alexandria is quietly one of Minnesota's best golf towns. Geneva Golf Club is the headliner: a classic parkland layout that hosts state tournaments. Arrowwood Resort's course, Atikwa, and the semi-private 9-hole Lake Miltona Golf Club round out a rotation that fills a long weekend without repeating a course. Book tee times a week out in summer.

On the water: 100+ lakes
You're in the Alexandria Lakes Area: the name is the pitch. Lake Miltona (5,700+ acres) delivers walleye, bass, northern pike, and some of the region's best fall crappie fishing. Beyond your dock: the Lake Carlos / Lake Le Homme Dieu chain for boating days, with public accesses that make trailering easy. Pontoon-friendly waters, sandy swimming spots, and sunsets that do the heavy lifting on your camera roll.

Wineries & breweries
Carlos Creek Winery (about 20 minutes) is the anchor: tasting room, live music weekends, 20 acres of vineyards, cold-climate wines (Marquette, Frontenac) you can't taste anywhere else, plus a brewery on site. Their Grape Stomp & Fall Festival on the third weekend of September is the event that pairs with peak color. It's the default Saturday afternoon for girls weekends, bachelorettes, and fall color tours.
Fall colors: late September to mid-October
The DNR's own fall color reporting puts the Lake Carlos / Glacial Lakes area among central Minnesota's peak zones: typically late September through mid-October, most often the first week of October. Drive the county roads past hardwood ridges and 300+ lakes reflecting red and gold, hike Inspiration Peak (400 feet above the countryside, panoramic views), and work in Maplewood, Glendalough, and Glacial Lakes state parks. Full playbook: our Alexandria fall colors getaway guide.
Downtown Alexandria
Small-town downtown done right: coffee shops, boutiques, the legendary 28-foot Big Ole Viking statue (you're taking the photo, don't fight it), Thursday farmers market in season, and the Douglas County Historical Society for a rainy hour.
Winter: ice fishing, skating & snowmobile trails
Alexandria doesn't hibernate. The lakes freeze into an ice-fishing culture all their own — Lake Miltona produces walleyes and crappies through the ice January through February, and the ice fishing shack scene is peak Minnesota. Snowmobile trails web out across Douglas County (368 miles of groomed trails), outdoor skating rinks pop up around town. Winter cabin weekends here are a legitimate trip, not a consolation prize.

Fishing opener (second Saturday of May)
Minnesota's walleye opener is a statewide holiday and Alexandria is in the middle of it. If you're coming for opener weekend, book lodging early.
Hunting season (November)
Firearms deer season opener (first Saturday of November) turns the whole area into deer camp country. If your crew needs a base, read our 2027 Minnesota deer season guide.
